Languages in the United States

Why should we learn a language other than English?  Spanish is one of the top 5 languages in the world, very closely tied with English.  Recently in the past few years, there has been a surge of Spanish immigrants moving to the United States.  Let’s take a look at exactly how many Spanish-speakers surround us.  Answer the following questions in your notebook:

1.     What do you think are the top 5 most spoken languages in the United States?

2.     View the map at: http://www.mla.org/map_single&lang_index=&state_index=&source=county&p=N&mapnum=1

According to the map what are the top 5 most spoken languages in the U.S.?

Was it the same as your prediction or was it different?  Why?

3.     Now go to: http://www.mla.org/map_compare

Create a map of the Spanish language in Maryland # by county.

Approximately, how many Spanish-speakers live in the Baltimore area?

Which area in the state has the highest population of Spanish-speakers? Why do you think so?

4.     Now on the other side, create a map of the Spanish language in Florida # by county.

What is the difference in Spanish-speaking populations in Maryland and Florida?

Why do you think there is a higher population of Spanish-speakers in Florida?

5.     Do you think there are other states that would have a higher population of Spanish-speakers?  Where? (Hint: look at the location of the Spanish-speaking countries below)

If time remains you may change the states on the maps to test your answers to this question.  Compare at least 2 other states.
